Marine Legislation
Marine legislation and regulations are constantly changing both globally and regionally. Monitoring and understanding the application & implications of changes can be a challenge for any shipping owner/operator. Legislation pertaining to marine emissions, is becoming more onerous and this trend will continue. In a desire to improve air quality, regulators will seek to reduce emissions to air from ships to the extent that it is almost inevitable that abatement technology will have to play a role in compliance with future emissions standards.
The current focus of attention of emissions from ship's combustion plant and diesel engines includes oxides of sulphur (SOx), oxides of nitrogen, (NOx) and particulate matter, (PM). Some of the options to control SOx and NOx emissions are widely known, however the control of PM emissions is significantly more challenging and ill-understood. Nevertheless IMO at a global level and California Air Resources Board (CARB) at a regional level are currently working on PM limits. Future limits on PM emissions together with the control of SOx & NOx emissions, implies that successful ship operators will need to understand the wider implications of future emissions legislation in terms of their environmental contribution and compliance, but also how it affects their financial performance.
In conjunction with BP Marine, Krystallon constantly updates its staff on the development and implementation of air emissions legislation, both global and regional. Our fully informed staff are able to knowledgeably advise on benefits and trade offs of installation of scrubbers versus other options. The information contained in this section therefore details some of this legislation and how it will affect various sectors of the shipping industry.
It is Krystallon's intention that operators should be well informed and able to be proactive in preparing and responding to future legislation and regulations. Awaiting implementation deadlines will often not provide sufficient time to effectively adjust fleet emissions resulting in additional costs or non-compliance risking ship detention. For many operators installing scrubbing technology will assure compliance with future legislation, something that Krystallon believes is a signficant benefit and is critically important for the successful operator.
Please look at the information listed in this section to understand how legislation may affect you and your operation. Should you need assistance with its interpretation or need additional or more detailed information, please do not hesitate to contact the Krystallon personnel whose details are given on this site.
